Africa is considered by most paleo-anthropologist to be the oldest inhabited territory on the face of Earth. It is also very well known that the oldest human species originated from the continent of Africa.

At one point in time, early in the history of Earth, there was only one land mass, named Pangea. One humungous mass of land, joined together from which all the 7 continents of Earth formed and even the sub-continent of India broke of from. In fact if you look closely at the land masses of the current continents you can see Brazil and the continent of South America broke of and fits into the indented curve of West Africa, around the states bordering the Bay of Guinea. Actually if you are studied enough you can find how and where all the land masses connected to one another and there are even time lapse videos depicting the change of Earths land in the timeframe of million of years.

Africa is also the world’s second largest contain and second most populated continent on Earth. Factually, right behind the continent of Asia in both categories of surface area and population. Coming in at about 30.4 million square kilometers, including its’ adjacent islands, Africa covers about 6% of earth’s total surface area and 20% of the earth’s total land area. Currently the continent contains a population of 1.31 billion people as of 2020.

Many people, as scholars, have attempted to derive and define the origin of the name of Africa. Specifically, from several etymological positions. It is known that the prefix “Afri” was derived from the Latin name used to refer to the inhabitants of the only then known parts of Northern Africa. From all land to the west of the Nile river, and in its widest sense referred to all lands south of the Mediterranean Sea, including ancient Libya. This Latin name “Afri,” seems to have originally referred to a native Libyan tribe, ancestors which belong to the modern-day Berbers.

When the Roman army conquered this territory, they called the conquered people Carthaginians. You may know of the Carthaginians through one of the greatest military generals in history, named Hannibal Barca, whom led his people in war against the Roman Republic in the Second Punic War; he himself was born in the land of Tunisia.

The name Africa is believed to be derived from the word “IFRIQIYA,” the name of the area now in modern Tunisia which means sunny place .The IFRIQIYA came about as a results of the conquest of the Byzantine(easten roman)by the Arabs.the 1st century Jewish historian Flavius Jesephus asserted that Africa is derived from the name Epher ,the grandson of abraham according to Genesis in the bible 25;4
